Vegetable Garden Planting Guide

January
Rest, recreate, socialize, eat stored produce, keep greenhouses alive, planning sessions for next year's garden.  Appreciate everyone's skills and contributions.

February
Order seeds, flats, soil mixes for flats, prepare greenhouses, cold frames, repair and service tillers and other equipment, sharpen and oil hand tools.

February 14 — 28:  Flat planting time in cold frames for the following: 
  onions, kale, collards, mustard, leeks, cabbage family, broccoli

March
Till the soil at the garden when ground is thawed, and dry on the surface.  Prune raspberries, mulch blueberries.  Rake and fertilize berry beds.

March 15-31:  Flat planting time in cold frames for the following:
Tomatoes, peppers (hot and sweet), eggplant (they like warm sunny days and cooler nights when growing in flats).  Germinate in house first, then move flats to cold frames.

 In-ground planting (when ground is thawed):
 Spinach, kale, and early salad crops

April
Weed asparagus and strawberries, divide perennials, mow grassy areas.  Protect sprouting greens from quail damage.  

In-ground planting (throughout month):
Potatoes, carrots, beets, peas, radishes, turnips, nappa cabbage, salad greens (by seed)

Transplanting to larger containers: 
Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant may be transplanted from flats to individual pots. 

Transplanting to the field:
Leeks, onions, kale, collards, mustard, cabbage, broccoli (from flats).

Flat planting for the following (late in month):
Zukes, melons, winter squash, cukes

May
Watch for last frost date.  Harvest radishes, turnips, baby greens.  Cultivate for weed control, break new ground, mow garden edges.  Put garden netting over strawberries to protect from birds.
  May (cont.)
In-ground planting (throughout month):
Corn varieties, Potatoes (additional), annual herbs, beans, tomato, pepper, eggplant starts.

June
Harvest:  strawberries, asparagus, greens, peas, onions, herbs, early broccoli, nappa cabbage.  Cultivate, weed, and mulch.  Till under harvested greens rows.   

In-ground planting:
Potatoes (additional), more greens, late peppers, starts for zukes, melons, cukes, winter squash.

July
Harvest:  new potatoes, early carrots, beans, peas, raspberries, zukes, cukes, blueberries, early tomatoes and peppers, greens, onions, broccoli, herbs.  Till under harvested greens rows and replant.  Harvest various herbs.  Replant zucchini for fall harvest (July 4th)

In-ground planting for fall starts:
Cabbage, broccoli, and greens.

August
Harvest:  tomatoes, peppers, zukes, cukes, eggplant, herbs, potatoes, garlic, onions, beans, early winter squash
Cultivate for weeds, mow garden edges, and till under harvested areas.
